Tutor Groups and Houses

Tutor groups

On entry to College each student is placed in a mixed ability tutor group of about 28 students, studying either French or Spanish. The Heads of Year oversee the team of tutors who are allocated to give pastoral care and lead their tutor group. The tutor will meet the tutor group in our morning greeting, register the group and read with them each morning as part of our Tutor Reading Programme. Where possible, tutors will see their groups through from the start of Year 7 to the end of Year 10 before handing them on to their ‘Period 0’ teacher for English and maths support in Year 11. Tutors teach an IAG (Information and Guidance) lesson each week. We aim to make the tutor groups as balanced as possible; the group is made up of a mixture of boys and girls, students from different primary schools, different abilities and individual needs. Students will have the majority of their lessons with their tutor group in Year 7.

Houses

All students will be in one of our four houses: Causley, Hepworth, Rescorla, and Trevithick. Houses are named after four significant Cornish figures, celebrated for achievements in their field. For all whole-school events, houses are in direct, friendly competition with each other. Whether it’s Sports Day or a charity event, students will have the opportunity to gain points that contribute to their house and each term one house will be awarded the much-coveted House Cup.

Beyond the ‘big’ events, we also celebrate when students are awarded for the everyday attributes we value; all represent their tutor group and their house in all lessons and around the college every day. Praise points gained for the following are also added to the running house totals:

• Achievement – succeeding in lessons by contributing positively and trying their best

• Attendance – 98% attendance or above

• Character – showing kindness, support, enthusiasm and resilience.
